The first mental asylum  was the Valencia hospital in Spain .Earlier the asylums was called the "mad houses".

DIX AND MENTAL HYGIENE MOVEMENT

Dorthea  Dix started  serving the poor  and the  people in mental institutions .She was a school teacher and she was forced to retire because she was suffering from tuberculosis.She had seen  that the people in the insane were subjected to tortures.After this in 1841 to 1881 she brought awareness among the people about how the mentally ill people was treated in .a inhuman way.Because of her the mental hygiene movement flourished in America.She completely brought a change in the asylum system in many countries .She was crowned as the noblest example of humanity.She established 32 mental  asylums.Her humane treatment towards the mentally ill was  a contrast to the earlier treatment which was very cruel act.

THE MILITARY AND THE MENTALLY ILL

The military treatment advanced  the mental health treatment .The first mental health facility for war casualties was set up by the Confederate army in American civil war.Psychiatrists started working with military administration and conducted research and trained doctors to identify the mental problems which could be a barrier to do their duty .They conducted a research on how the alchol consmption  affects soldiers to their duty effectively.
